Advice for digital painting?

:iconnatalolli:
~Natalolli Aug 28, 2012  Student
I'm kind of new to digital painting, I've been doing it for a while but haven't made anything too fancy.
I use photoshop essentials 9
I'm beginning to learn smaller things like how different brushes help with textures and how the alt button is a life savor
I have corel painter but I'm not to sure how to use it..
Any advice that could help/useful videos on corel?

In photoshop.... Learn what masks do and how to use them. They are the bread and butter that is far more powerful than just ctrl z. You can allow it to show only certain portions of a layer, as apposed to erasing them and losing what you erased forever, unless u undo back to that stage.

Masks, are you new best friend. That and find a brush that works for you, you might see many people using a certain brush and think. Yes, ill get that, then ill have the upper hand and it will be good. Nein. It doesn't work that way, that's how i used to think, but now, you just gotta find what fits you best. Stick with that. :)

I just looked up tutorials on layer masks and you're right - we are going to become well acquainted.
And thanks for the tip, I should just try them all and see what works. Practice practice practice :)

CTRL + Z is your best friend.

And if you have a tablet, make sure you install the disc before even trying the tablet/

Haha yeah, you're right! I love having the ability to undo mistakes. And I have the disc installed but thanks for the tip anyway, it's something I definitely would do.

The only thing I can think of is do you have any blending tips for photoshop? Thanks a lot :D

For blending tips? Hmm, usually I lower the density of the color brush tool and use the water brush tool. I also create multiple layers to experiment the inner and outer layers of my blending as well.

Usually I use Paint Tool Sai for blending :D

Cool, I'll check out those brushes. And I've heard a lot of good things about that Sai program. Gonna check that out too.:)

In painter, make sure the 'pick up underlying colour' button is selected, so that the brushes behave how you'd expect.
Play around with different category brushes, and pull your favourites out into a custom palette to keep them handy.

dA has a whole section on Corel Painter tutorials here: [link]

Oh wow thanks for the tip! That sounds like it will solve one of the bigger problems I was having with it.
And I didn't know about the tutorials, I'm going to go check them out now.
Thanks a bunch!
