As the above says, I'm working on one-layer and speedpaints to help get past my art block. Is there any particular advice or tutorials you would recommend?

use HQ to draw a pixel shade, then paint bucket fill the color. selection and coloring.
resize to fix non-smooth problems.

Thanks for the tutorial! You did a nice job on it. What I'm working on right now is painting without a line sketch, and defining things through color, value, and shapes.

I use a lot of the basic brushes that comes with Photoshop. I started drawing in Photoshop 2.5 and back then it didn't have layers, so drawing over mistakes is better than doing undo sometimes, and when the mistake is really messed up undo is better.

If you want to reposition things you can use Liquify. I have started out only thinking of drawing a face and have the eyes too big and in the wrong place so I use Liquify and make the bush size big enough to drag the eyes in place.

When I draw a lot of brown leaves on a forest floor I use a hard brush and draw in a pattern to make it look like leaves and add different colors for different leaves. Tree bark is the same with a smaller hard brush, and with grass speckled brush. I use the speckled brush for moss, hair, freckles, and hair stubble.

Drawing textures while you are working quickly can create a nearly finished look very quickly.

Here is what I created drawing quickly to get my idea on canvas and learning the brush strokes, colors, and drawing patterns to give it a finished look in minutes.

I personally prefer the lasso tool - I find it easier to control. Thanks for the advice!

I can say I use one layer for most time of my process, and my technique is simply abot..making big shapes and using eyedropper for most of time. Oh, and try to make use of some textured brushes- you can use custom ones or download some from dA. There isn't really any secret. Like :iconDamaiMikaz : wrote- JUST DO IT! :D

Yeah, I love trying out stroke brushes. Textures I try to do manually.

Not being afraid of making mistakes. Just do it.
And don't use a canvas too large (or just zoom out) so you can see how the composition works.

That's what I try to remember when going into a one-layer. And the alt-click shortcut.
