New to digital painting but willing to learn

:icongisela1910:
Hello Everyone,

I am fairly new to digital painting I have corel painter 12 and Photoshop cs5-1. I have been digital painting portraits recently but not freehand or from sketch. I have been following tutorials of Fay Sirkis, Helen Yancy, Karen Sperling where they paint direct on photograph but many professional artist mentioned that it is not proper painting unless it's freehand. I am not an artist at all and would no way be able to draw freehand like professional artist I would love to be able to paint like a Professional Artist but it's another world to me.

I've decided to try sketching my portraits photograph then paint from the sketch but I cannot see much dvd tutorials out there apart from the one I've mentioned.

If anyone can direct me to dvd tutorial painting from sketch I would be most grateful.

Any replay would be much appreciate

thanks

Thanks everybody for your replies appreciate it, I've decided to dive in the deep end and start learning sketches and freehand drawings.

It's a massive big challenge for me but I am looking forward to get started.

Hopefull I can throw something in the forum for critiques.

cheers

what you have been doing is a very good practice. You should gradually start to try free handed things ^^
When using references you lear the basics and the flow XD

Youtube has a lot of video tutorials for art. Most of it is crap, but there are some jewels like the ImagineFX channel: [link]
They offer digital art tutorials and also videos of artists creating their work from (almost) start to finish, almost like looking over a master's shoulder as they paint. They offer pretty advanced advice, but good advice nonetheless.
'Hope this is helpful and good luck!

Thank you, yes it is helpful I've visited youtube and watch some videos but the artists paint in speed also you don't always see what brushes are being used.

I've downloaded some tutorials and try to play them in slow speed, I just need to practice, practice and more practice shall get there in the end lol nothing in life is easy or a quick fix.

well I'm not sure where to find a "DVD" especially a free one >>not saying your only looking for a free one but its definitely an easier choice...<< but i have gone onto youtube and found many 'short' clips on how to use certain parts or tools but not the whole thing. I wish i had had something to help me learn it easier, instead i taught my self or asked someone, so I'm sorry if you don't find much cuz theres really not much out there. Good luck though ^^

Thank you, no there isn't enough tutorials about DA has plenty but not detailed explanation about what brushes to use and how to paint for a noob like me but I shall self taught trials and errors and lots of practices I shall get there in the end. I have plenty dvd tutorial but they paint straight on photographs I prefer to paint from scratch be it start from sketching the photograph I am having fun with the sketching first step to take I suppose.

I don't know that you'll find a DVD tutorial, but this site has a huge written tutorials section you can go through. There's a ton of useful stuff in there.

Also, if you're looking to simulate photos in your sketches, I'd advise looking up gridding methods.

Thanks for your prompt reply appreciate it, I know this site is great but I feel they are not for complete newbie like me, some don't tell you what brushes to use, what opacity where to start it's more for the savvy not being ungrateful just needing a little spoon fed whilst while I am learning from scratch.
