hey, i'm taking an introduction to 3d modeling class and for the first project I need to model an object in maya, do you think it would be cheating to follow a tutorial to model that object? I'm still unfamiliar with maya and I think this would be the best way to go.
This is something that you should ask the teacher. Is it a tutorial with downloadable files like models? (don't do that) If it is a well known tutorial with an unusual object, then your teacher might recognize your finished model. so ask the teacher.
When you model in Maya start with something simple for your own creation, but to learn how to use the tools like zoom and rotate, and basic work with nodes a tutorial would help a lot. You don't want to be confused and not remember what you did, or what tool you used. Learning the program is important part of what you will need to make your own stuff, and the best way to to that is to be guided through the process.
Whatever you do, make sure you come away from the excersise with the knowledge that you need. If you weren't shown how to do this in class, then looking up literature on maya in order to self-instruct is surely what they expect you to do.
I would suggest that to get the most out of it you follow a couple of tutorials for simple objects of different shapes, and then for your assignment try and model something on your own. The idea being so that you don't only learn how to model one thing based on a single tutorial trick.
I remember when I did a 3D animation class the only demo object was a vase, and I was like "great, now I can model as many vases as I like... how useful!!" </sarcasm>
