Hi, I'm starting as a fine art major in the Fall and was curious about digital media. I was loking into tablets but saw that the prices were down pretty much and found myself wondering if they were on their way out of the graphic world. A couple people who studied graphic design tipped me off, that the iPad is taking over the industry and a lot of work is being done on them. I was hoping for more opinions on the matter if I should invest in an ipad instead of the cheaper wacom tablet. Thanks for the help :]
I would say if you can invest in both. I love my iPad and drawing on it is wonderful, I have found finishing off artwork is ten times better with the intuos however. The pressure sensitivity just adds a dynamic even the best sylus cannot achieve. Even the new bluetooth ones are limited to 200 steps, compared to 2048 steps with the intuos. I like to start works on my iPad and then when it gets to the fine details switch to the computer. Thats how I started my last piece. The was about 50 done on the iPad. the rest was done using desktop software. So yeah, both if you can afford it
An iPad is not better than the Wacom + computer anyday, an iPad should only be used for on the go stuff, like sketching, everything else would be done on the computer with a graphics tablet.
The ipad especially with a good software package like procreate (£1.99) and a decent stylus does have a good software algorythm for producing realistic strokes and lines, however its no match for a wacom tablet and a computer, I often find working on the ipad is more entertaining, and often more like actual drawing, I also found at first that my graphics tablet was hard to get used to, I couldnt get used to lookign at my screen and not the hand, In some ways the ipad is easier, it feels more like a pen and paper, but if you want pure, perfect results the wacom beats it every time
I find the iPad really great for starting projects... sketching while away from the computer, etc. But for finished pieces, it definitely can't replace a wacom + computer. Like a lot of people have said, pressure sensitivity is an issue, as well as seeing small details and stuff like that.
I love using the iPad, as you can get many different types of apps. I do all of my art on an iPad app called procreate, which currently costs 4.99, and is a wonder, wonderful app with many different selections. Soren examples of my art in procreate [link]
In my experiences using a tablet provides far more accuracy than an iPad, I own a Wacom bamboo fun (on of the cheapest Wacom tablets) and it's quality is incredible, especially when compared to an iPad, I have used a friends iPad with a stylus and the level of accuracy was far less, there was also the problem of not being able to see what you were drawing when adding fine details due to the problem of the stylus getting in the way. Another good thing about the tablet I bought was that it came with a free copy of Photoshop elements.
