Uhm... usually a ton. In the least around 90 layers and upwards, depending on the complexity of the project. I got lucky with some only around 50-70 layers. I find myself always needing to toss a bunch of layers into group folders otherwise I get confused myself as to where everything is, I don't have time to name each layer either.
Depends what I'm drawing. I usually have a layer with refs, then a first sketch, another sketch and then one for my lineart and then one for colour. This obviously doubles if there's more than one character. I have one for the bg and sections of that. So about 10ish usually c:
just depends on what im working on. the most ill ever use is like 20 and thats for really colorful paintings. for portraits i try to use the minimal amount. so black and white are like 2 layers and color are like 6. Characters in color are like 12. Ill use a lot more layers when coloring, to get the colors to pop. other then that less is more when it comes to layers. Having a lot of layers ends up being messy unorganized and a pain to click through. IF anyone is using a ton of layers, your best bet is to make groups and organize the layers in each group. That helps me when i have a lot so my head doesnt explode trying to find the layer i need.
With digital painting, I find myself using fewer layers as time goes on. Sometimes I only have a background and the main painted layer with maybe a few layers of some sort of filtering or effects. Though you won't find much in my gallery because I am lazy about uploading. Dx
I'm curious as to how it is for other people.
Do you use different amounts of layers for different types of projects?
